Comparing Select and Premier Level Soccer in Clark County, Washington

SELECT

Competition Level

·     Goal:  Top 10 ranking in WA

·     Goal:  Seek out competition with top West Coast Clubs (Crossfire, FC Portland, and other region clubs from Idaho, Utah, and California). 

·     Tournaments:  Enter Bronze and better (Got Soccer classifications).  2-3 overnight tournaments and 2-3 Vanc/Portland area tournaments

·     League play:  Goal is WA PDL or WSYSA D3 or better

·     State Cup:  Championship Cup with goal to qualify for Regional’s.

·     Goal: Competitive team vs other Vancouver/Portland area Select/D5 teams and successful participation in WSYSA State cup.

·     Tournaments:  Focus on local tournaments.  1-2 Bronze level.  Usually no more than one overnight tournament.  3-5 total.

·     League play:  Typically D5 with a few teams playing in Oregon

·     State Cup:  Commissioner’s Cup with a few in the Challenge Cup.

Length of Season

 

Note:  Significant changes are happening at the state level in WA and OR that will impact the schedule for tournament, league and state cup schedules.

·     Practice:  2x per week with some additional weekend scrimmages or practices.  Most start 2-3 weeks after spring break except for HS boys.

·     Summer tournament play commencing Memorial Day weekend and continue up to Labor Day.

·     League play:  WSYSA, 14 games, Sat or Sun play, starts the weekend after Labor Day and ending in December. PDL plays 12 to 14 games on Sat and some Sun through November.

·     State Cup play starts in January and conclude in March (except HS girls – they start in March and conclude early April).

·     Overall, the season is usually 9 to 10 months

·     Practice:  Variable by team.  Starting in mid May for soccer only teams or mid June for those that with a high baseball contingent.

·     Summer tournament play varies widely depending upon the team.  Teams are usually competing no later than mid July.

·     League:  WSYSA Dist. 5, Sa only play, 8-10 games, play starts the weekend after Labor Day and ends in early November.   HS girls play in the spring). Oregon, 14 games, Sat & Sun play, same start, ending in late October.  HS girls play in the spring.

·     State Cup play starts in January and conclude in March (except HS girls – they start in March and conclude early April).

·     Overall, the season is usually 7 to 9 months

Coaching

·     Goal: State D license or better.

·     Goal: 50% of coaches have ODP, college or national experience.

·     Goal: State E license or better.

·     Most coaches are parents with strong local ties.

·     Many coaches have playing experience.

Cost Per Player

 

·     Up front - ~$800. This includes all practice fields, virtually all tournament fees, all league fees and state cup fees.

·     Uniforms ~$150 (target every 3rd year)

·     Travel – varies widely, but may include 1 more tournaments in Seattle area and 1 in Boise, ID (US Club Soccer) and/or CA

·     Coaching Fees – range from no additional cost to $400.

·     Overall, costs range from $800 to $1350 + travel costs, per season.

·     *The above costs are for FC Vancouver Premier Soccer Club. Other Premier clubs charge as much as $2,000 to $4,000 or more per season.

·     Up front club fee $100 to $500 (includes D5 league fee) plus variable expenses depending on the team. This includes all practice field expenses, tournament fees, league fees for OR or WA and state cup fees.

·     Uniforms ~$150 (target every 3rd year)

·     Travel – varies significantly from team to team but will typically include very limited out-of-town travel for overnight tournaments

·     Coaching Fees – typically coaches are not paid

·     Overall, costs range from $400 to $750 + travel costs, per season.

Multi-Sport

Athletes

·     FCV encourages it’s members to be well rounded.  Virtually all athletes compete in multiple sports. 

·     Coaches will make allowances, where practical, for multi sport athletes.  That being said, it is challenging for athletes to join more than one traveling sport.

·     Development comes through practice.  Members are expected to make the majority of practices and matches.  Play time in matches may be contingent on attendance at practices

·     Select play most easily accommodates multi sport athletes with shorter season and less travel.

·     Coaches will make allowances, where practical, for multi sport athletes.
