On a cold, wet Seattle afternoon, the CW Strikers
won the Fred Meyer Commissioner’s Cup GU13 State championship. They
were victorious in an exciting, back-and-forth game against the
Revolution from Puyallup that ended up being decided in a shoot-out.
The action started less than 3 minutes into the
game when Alexis Rhodes from the right crossed the ball in front of
the goal but the keeper tipped it towards the left. Kendra Cochran
reached it just outside the left post and put it into the net. The
Strikers continued to dominate. In the 18th minute Madeline
Down took a free kick from 45 yards out. The ball bounced around
between the teams right in front of the goal, when the Revolution
cleared it up the middle. However, defender Camille Parsons ran up and
launched a perfect shot from 30 yards out that went over the keeper’s
head and dropped in just under the crossbar. The Revolution roared
back and had two strong opportunities. One close shot went over the
Strikers’ goal. Another shot got past the Striker’s keeper, Robyn
Pfeifer but was blocked by Madeline Down. The Striker’s defense of
Pfeifer, Down, Parsons, Olivia Eagle, and Alex Dombek held firm. The
first half ended with the Striker’s ahead 2-0.
However, the 2nd half belonged to the
Revolution. In the 2nd minute they scored off of a corner
kick. The pressure continued. Pfeifer had numerous saves, including
collecting one ball which was headed towards the goal off of a corner
kick. The game went back and forth, with the Striker’s continuing to
attack. One opportunity came when Gabby Witt got the ball to Renee
Valenter who made a strong shot on goal only to have it stopped in a
great effort by the Revolution keeper. With just a few minutes left
the Revolution fired a shot that went off the crossbar. Pfeifer turned
around and caught the rebound while facing the goal. Then, with less
than two minutes left in regulation play, the Revolution tied the game
with an arcing shot that dropped in just below the crossbar.
Regulation time ended in a 2-2 tie. The game proceeded to two
10-minute overtime periods. The teams battled back and forth with no
change in score, leading to a penalty kick shootout.
In the Semifinal game, two weeks ago, the
Strikers had been in the same situation (2-2 tie), but came up
victorious in a shootout. Now they found themselves facing the same
pressure-packed scenario. The first five opportunities for each team
ended with two misses for each, for a 3-3 tie, with Valenter, Parsons,
and Dombek scoring. After that it was “sudden death”. Ashley Sturza
scored the next one, which was matched by Revolution. Eagle made her
shot. Pfeifer told herself that she had to stop the next kick!
The Revolution player launched the ball towards the upper left corner
of the goal. Pfeifer reached up and popped the ball up into the air.
The ball hit the crossbar and bounced out! The Strikers had won the
State Championship!
